Spain Travel Guide

Eat, drink and be merry

Visiting Spain is not only about sun, great cuisine, and a warm welcome, but also its rich monumental heritage and dazzling natural environment. There is a perfect destination for everyone. Beyond the cliched images of Flamenco dancers, sangria, paella and toreros in the bullrings, scratch this surface and an unexpected diverse country unfolds before you: the green hills and the wild Pyrenees of the north, castles and medieval villages in th ancient Castille like Toledo, the white villages of Andalucia; and mountain ranges such as Sierra Nevada. Its regions differ vastly from one another but are held together by a national passion for drama, contrast and a noisy, live-for-today hedonism. One thing all Spaniards love is to eat and drink, whether enjoying tapas in Madrid, Barcelona or Seville, pintxos in the Basque Country or tasty paella in Valencia Region. Each of the Balearic Islands could be said to have a theme. Mallorca the traditional sea ‘n’ sun seaside tourism. Ibiza is equivalent to clubbing. Menorca and relaxing island are tranquillity.

Surrounded by the cool blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean, the Canary Islands show off all their magic in an archipelago unique in the world for its diversity and subtropical beauty; an entire universe that you can enjoy in a spring-like climate which lasts twelve months a year. The Canaries are seven islands: El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, all of which are truly spectacular and at the same time very different from one another, seduce the visitor with an exceptional range of tourism options among which you will find the best accommodation and top quality leisure and cultural activities.

Few know that Spain has four official languages: Spanish (Castilian), Catalan, Galician (gallego) and Basque (euskera). Spain is, above all, a mosaic of cultures. Heterogeneous. Old and modern. Refined and popular. Holy and secular. Plural and diverse. The variety of its cultures attracts. The historic heritage dazzles. The vital power of its people fascinates.

Cultural tourism is becoming an alternative to sun and beach tourism, as a result of the wealth and quality of the museums, monuments, fiestas and traditions, not to mention the expositions and various cultural displays. To quote an example, let's say that Spain is one of the richest countries in the world with regard to monumental heritage; it is not in vain that Spain has the highest number of Unesco World Heritage listings. An approximate inventory of the monuments in Spain would reveal over 20,000 important pieces. Spanish theatre and cinema is becoming a reference point in Europe, thanks to events such as the Theatre Festivals of Merida, Sagunto and Almagro and the San Sebastian-Donostia and Valladolid cinema festivals.
