La Bisbal d’Emporda is the chief town of the Baix Emporda region; it is a busy market town serving the whole comarca. For centuries it has been a pottery manufacturing town and still boasts a school of pottery and numerous workshops. It was formerly a domain of the bishops of Girona (hence its name, the Catalan word for the bishops is bisbe), and the most outstanding building is the former bishops’ castle-palace which has Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance features. In the Baroque parish church there are two very old figures representing a dragon and an eagle which are carried in procession on the feast of Corpus Christi. Other sights are the medieval bridge over the Daro River and Les Voltes, a group of 18th century houses. The town possesses a famous band, the Cobla Principal de la Bisbal, which accompanies sardana dancing.
