Florida Travel Guide

A place that captures the imagination

Florida is a place that captures the imagination. Spanish conquistadors saw manatees and imagined they were mermaids; Ponce de León saw a pring and imagined it was the fountain of youth. In its history, Florida has inspired as much madness as fantasies of a magic kingdom. Florida's beaches rank among the best beaches in the country for beauty, accessibility and facilities. Families, couples and active singles enjoy year-round sunshine, glittering white sand and clear Gulf of Mexico or Atlantic Ocean waters.

Miami, Florida is one of the state’s most popular vacation spots. It is well-known for beaches including South Beach, trendy nightlife, the Art Deco district, Calle Ocho and Little Havana. Miami’s South Beach draws in the rich, famous and trendy. Nightlife abounds, but South Beach is also a historic district, a people-watching haven and a beach-lover’s dream. Palm trees, tropical beach huts and sandy roadsides grace the 106.5 miles of Florida Keys Scenic Highway connecting the world-famous island-hopping Florida Keys along U.S. 1 to Mile Marker 1 - the southernmost point in the continental United States. With the gentle turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico on one side and the majestic Atlantic Ocean on the other, you will travel over forty-three bridges from Key Largo to Key West.

A favorite Central Florida vacation destination, Orlando is beloved for its theme parks, water parks, shopping malls and dining. Throughout Florida, countless theme parks continually attract visitors with screaming coasters and wild water parks. Central Florida is home to Walt Disney World Resort including Magic Kingdom Park, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park plus Universal Studios Florida and Universal's Islands of Adventure, and SeaWorld, as well as several water parks. On the west coast, Busch Gardens combines a zoo with a theme park. Search the listings section for dozens of other options. Fort Lauderdale, Florida is famous for its beaches, arts, culture and events. From shopping on Las Olas Boulevard, to gondola rides on the canals, to a historic riverfront, Fort Lauderdale makes for an exciting Florida vacation. St. Augustine, the United States' oldest continuously settled city, was founded by Spanish explorer Pedro Menendez de Aviles in 1565.

Miami Beach Bears Little Resemblance to CSI Miami

    by David Gimenez

Most of the time I arrive at a destination without preconceived notions, but Miami Beach was steeped in expectation. Thanks to the popular TV show, CSI Miami, I imagined exquisitely preserved art deco architecture, tropical weather, oiled body-builders with rippling muscles, exuberant Latin culture, and colors vivid enough to make your eyeballs hurt. It was none of those things.
