The oldest and most important spa in Europe

Abano Terme is a spa resort in the Veneto region of north-east Italy, in the province of Padua, in the Veneto region. It is 10 kilometers southwest by rail from Padua. Abano Terme is the oldest and most important spa in Europe. Delightfully sighted at the foot of the Euganean Hills it is right in the centre of the region of Veneto. Abano's climate is mild for most of the year with an annual average temperature of 14°C. It is usually sunny and it rainsmore often during Autumn and Spring.

The city where nowadays about 18,000 people live has developed along the Viale delle Terme, the main road that links the city's historical area to the thermal one, where there are the hot springs of Montirone and the oldest spa hotels: Todeschini, Orologio and Trieste Victoria. As a visitor you will be struck by the elegance of the city: its new buildings surrounded by public and private gardens, colourful flower beds, squares, fountains, parks, and wide streets. All of which make it a city-garden. Abano is in the middle of Padua, Verona, Vicenza,Treviso… cities renowned all over the world for their art treasures. it an ideal starting point in order to explore the region of Veneto and all its treasures. Venice, the most romantic city in the world is only 30 minutes from Abano Terme.

The baths were known to the Romans as Aponi fons or Aquae Patavinae. A description of them is given in a letter of Theodoric, the king of the Ostrogoths. Some remains of the ancient baths have been discovered. The baths were destroyed by the Lombards in the 6th century, but they were rebuilt and enlarged when Abano became an autonomous comune in the 12th century and, again, in the late 14th century. The city was under the Republic of Venice from 1405 to 1797.
